Eli’s last evening on earth was shared with some friends from Desert Pea Media, a collective of young people who are currently undertaking innovative work with youth and indigenous communities of Australia. Under the artistic direction of Toby Finlayson and Matt Priestley, Desert Pea have a successful track record providing long-term sustainable multimedia mentoring programs within Aboriginal communities. Desert Pea embody many objectives that we hope to achieve with the Smugglers of Light Foundation and we plan to collaborate with them on future projects. We hope that the foundation will also be able to support other groups and individuals who are doing good work in "youth at risk" and indigenous communities. |
Funding raised from The Smugglers of Light Foundation will assist Desert Pea’s ongoing hip hop music storytelling workshop programs in remote aboriginal communities. These workshops will be documented on film. Other ideas that our foundation would like to support include “Step by Step” - a grassroots leadership and mentoring program currently being developed in 18 Aboriginal communities around North West NSW. Eli had a passion for contemporary arts and music and cross cultural ties and we view the foundation as an appropriate way to honor his memory. |
